Police Blotter: Dog Bite, Drunk Driver, Stranded Women in Grosse Pointe Woods

The following information is gathered by the Departments of Public Safety of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate conviction.

Grosse Pointe Woods police issued a citation to a 42-year-old Grosse Pointe Park man May 2 for failing to report an accident. The man had been parking on the street in front of Parcells field on Vernier Road when he hit a minivan. The man drove away and did not provide the owner with his information. The minivan had scratches and a cracked bumper as a result. A witness reported the crash to the minivan's owner. When officers approached the man, he said he tried to find the parent on the field but no one claimed to own it, according to a report.

Stranded Women Helped
Grosse Pointe Woods police helped two women forced out of a car near Mack and Hawthorne shortly after 2 a.m. May 2. The women, from Ray Township and Romeo, were in the car with a man who was the boyfriend on one of them. They were arguing and the man made the woman and her friend get out of the car near Moross and Mack but he returned several minutes later to pick them back up. They began arguing again and he made them get back out near Hawthorne and Mack Avenue. The woman told police there was not any battery, which is what was called in to 911. She said their had been shoving when the man was trying to take her phone away while she was calling 911. Both women were driven to the police station so they could wait inside while they waited for a ride, according to a report.

Dog Bite Reported
A 70-year-old Grosse Pointe Woods woman reported May 31 that she was bitten by a lab May 20 while picking up her grandchild from Monteith Elementary School. The woman said several children were petting the dog and that the dog crouched down and popped up, then bit her in the face. The woman sought treatment to her face for injuries to her nose and lip, which were visible to the officer when he took the report. The officer explained the behavior is common for high energy dogs when they want to play and told the woman the dog was likely being friendly. The woman told the officer she was relieved to hear that and she did not wish to pursue charges. She told the officer she had been having panic attacks every time she saw a dog as a result, according to a report.

Drunk Driver Arrested
Grosse Pointe Woods police arrested a man June 2 shortly after 3 a.m. for drunken driving after he was spotted driving without a wheel. The vehicle was sparking and had flames coming from the area where the wheel was missing as the man drove near Holiday and Dorthen. The man was pulled over and got out of the car. The officer used an extinguisher to put out the fire. The man smelled of alcohol, had urinated in his pants and failed all field sobriety tests. A portable breath test showed he had a 0.16 percent blood alcohol content and a formal test at the police station showed he had a 0.12 and 0.13 percent blood alcohol content, according to a report.
