Suspect in Grosse Pointe Park Firebombing to Stand Trial

A Grosse Pointe Park man accused of firebombing the home of Gary and Janet Van Elslander will stand trial.

A Grosse Pointe Park man accused of firebombing the home of Gary and Janet Van Elslander was bound over to stand trial in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Charles Patterson Kay was alleged to have thrown a molotov cocktail was through a kitchen window of a home in the 700 block of Whittier shortly before 3:30 a.m. May 17.

The molotov cocktail partially ignited and a fire alarm at the house woke the homeowners, Patch reported. The homeowners extinguished the blaze before Grosse Pointe Park public safety officers arrived.

Kay appeared Wednesday in Grosse Pointe Park Municipal Court Tuesday, and was bound over to stand trial on charges of second degree arson, sending explosive with intent causing damage and possession of a molotov cocktail.

Officers searching the area arrested Kay, Patch reported. Grosse Pointe Park Public Safety Director David Hiller told Patch that the crime was not targeting the Van Elslanders but was random.

Kay was previously found competent to stand trial. He will be arraigned in Wayne County Circuit Court on Nov. 13.
