Wayne County Medical Examiner Rules Death of Clinton Twp. Man Accident

The death of a 21-year-old man who died last week after crashing a stolen vehicle into the wall on Beaconsfield while an officer was attempting to stop him for speeding has been ruled an accident.

Following an autopsy, the Wayne County Medical Examiner's office has ruled that the death of a 21-year-old Clinton Township man was an accident, Dr. Carl Schmidt said.

Von Ralph Verrett died of multiple injuries sustained in the near Jefferson, Schmidt said.

A patrol officer had been attempting to stop Verrett for speeding at the time of the crash. The officer began attempting to stop him on Mack Avenue, where the posted speed limit is 30 miles per hour, but he sped up even more and continued driving, Detective David Loch previously told Patch.

Verrett turned from Mack Avenue onto Beaconsfield, where many residents were awakened by the pursuit. He was pronounced dead at St. John's Hospital.

A Michigan State Police accident reconstruction investigator was called to the scene of the crash and will turn results of the investigation over to Grosse Pointe Park when it is complete.

From the Park's perspective, the investigation is complete, Loch previously told Patch. Although Verrett was driving a stolen vehicle, they don't believe he stole it but it was unclear how he came to possess it, Loch previously told Patch.

Verrett was listed as a probation absconder on the  Michigan Department of Corrections website. He was sentenced in June on second degree home invasion and possession of stolen property.

Attempts to contact Verrett's family by Patch have been unsuccessful.
