The Grosse Pointe Woods city council approved a 5K charity race Monday scheduled for April 28.

The Grosse Pointe Woods city council approved a 5K benefit race by Grosse Pointe North's environmental club, S.A.V.E., Monday night with specifications about the operation of the actual event.

North's environmental science teacher, Chris Skowronski, petitioned the city for approval, noting the race is intended to raise awareness about fitness, its connection to living healthier and the impact upon the environment.

Proceeds from the race will be donated to Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation specifically to support research of childhood cancer.

Public Safety Director Andrew Pazuchowski reviewed the application and made some suggestions, including the presence of eight officers to ensure public safety during the event. The cost of those officers, approximately $1500, will be incurred by the race, according to the paperwork presented to city council.

The organizers of the race are hoping to get 400 runners/walkers to participate. Registration for the race is available online.
