The council gave the final approval for the , a new health and fitness community center, Monday during a special meeting.

In two unanimous votes, the council approved both the special land use request as well as the site plans for the new center, which is slated to break ground in September on the current site of the Neighborhood Club at Waterloo and Notre Dame streets.

Alderman is familiar with the Neighborhood Club, its offerings as well as its mission, as his own children participated in programs when they were young. Alderman also has been involved with a variety of community recreation organizations throughout his career, according to the release.

Alderman will replace the former director John Bruce, who retired this year after decades of operating the community organization. Sean Bruce is John Bruce's son and has been running it in the interim.
