Demolition Bids to Come for Former Kroger in Farms

Officials from the grocer are in the midst of cleaning out their property from the building located on Mack Avenue near Moross Road.

The Kroger Company is moving the last of its property from its former location on Mack Avenue and will be out by the end of this month. Farms officials did a walk-through of the property Thursday as they prepare to begin gathering bids for demolition.

Farms City Manager Shane Reeside said the building is not in the best condition for development purposes and the city council will review bids for demolition during its March meeting.

Kroger closed its doors to the public Nov. 13—one day before the newly constructed . Kroger had leased the building from the Farms for years and when the decision was made to rebuild the Village location, the Farms location began doing a year-to-year lease, said Reeside.

The lease is set to expire at the end of February, at which time the Farms will take possession. The hope is to have the building demolished quickly with cleaning and sprucing up competed by springtime, Reeside said.

The conditions and the credit market didn't make it ideal for development at this point, Reeside said. The Farms long ago converted the neighboring lot of the abandoned building to green space in an effort to dampen criminal activity and problematic behavior that was beginning to be an issue for the Farms at additional buildings that were once there.

Council members will also have to decide what they want to do with the space after demolition. Ideas are likely to be discussed, at least preliminarily, at the March meeting, Reeside said.

It is possible the city may convert the empty lot into an additional green space but nothing has been determined yet, Reeside said.
