Grosse Pointe Woods Asks for Meeting with DTE

Following the most recent power outage in Grosse Pointe Woods, city officials are asking DTE for a meeting for some answers.

city officials have requested a meeting with DTE following for nearly 24 hours.

Thousands across the Detroit area were without power Thursday and the cause thus far is being blamed on high winds. That isn't a satisfactory answer, however, to Grosse Pointe Woods residents and business owners near Mack Avenue and Vernier Road.

According to the outage maps by DTE, more than 1,200 residents and business owners in the 48236 ZIP code were without power. Some of those include residents from Grosse Pointe Farms, but the Woods suffered from the largest outage area.

restaurant and the Mobil gas station closed for the day. The normally well-lit corner was noticeably dark even before sundown Thursday. While the traffic light at the same intersection stayed lit Thursday, area residents woke Friday to find the because it did not have power.

Generators began humming before dawn Thursday and continued running well past the return of power about 11 p.m. The area has historically been heavily hit with power outages and Woods councilwoman Vicki Granger said city officials have asked for a meeting with DTE officials.

City officials had worked closely with DTE in the past to address the area plagued by the outages and the power grid serving the area had been upgraded, according to what DTE told city officials previously.

Following Thursday's outage, however, residents and business owners are questioning whether any upgrade was ever performed. Chatter about it has been lighting up Facebook and other social media sites where neighbors are venting their frustrations and questioning DTE's work.

The city is looking to find out why DTE hasn't been able to fix the problem and to find out what steps DTE is taking to permanently fix it, Granger said. City officials were waiting for a reply from DTE officials Friday.

Patch is awaiting a return call from DTE media relations regarding the work that has been done to the power grid serving that area.
