Michigan Senate Releases Proposed District Map

Under proposed plan, the five Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods remain in the same district along with Hamtramck, Redford City and a sliver of Detroit bordering Oakland and Macomb Counties.

Legislators are trying to draw up the new district plans after the 2010 census revealed Detroit's population dropped significantly. The plans call for one less senator to represent Wayne County, requiring district maps to be redrawn.

According to maps released Friday by the Michigan Senate, seven senators instead of eight would work for Wayne County residents.

The five Grosse Pointes, Harper Woods, Hamtramck and Redford Township and a sliver of the norther portions of Detroit bumping against the Oakland and Macomb county lines. That area carved out on the map looks somewhat like an old fashioned key and would be district 1.

All of the same communities are currently represented by the same senator but a larger portion of Detroit is included in the current district configuration. It represents district 2 but as one fewer district is being configured for the new map, the numbers to represent the name shifted north.
