Shoppers, diners and visitors to City of Grosse Pointe, and the Village shopping district, can enjoy reduced parking by using a mobile app and free parking on Saturdays in the Village.

Shoppers heading to the City of Grosse Pointe can take advantage of discounted parking by using a new mobile phone app to pay for parking meters throughout the community.

Parkmobile USA recently launched their service in the City of Grosse Pointe which allows motorists to use their cell phones to pay for parking by using the company's mobile applications on iPhone, Android, Windows, and Blackberry smart phones.

To mark the launch, the city is offering a holiday promotion of a $1-off a one-time parking charge during a Parkmobile activated session at parking meters in the city.

“The City is pleased to offer parkers an option to be able to pay electronically. Parkers no longer having to carry around a pocketful of change, or rush out to feed the parking meter more money while enjoying a local restaurant or leisurely shopping,” City Manager Pete Dame said in a release.

Users of the app can enter the promotion code of "GPHOLIDAY" to receive the one-time only, $1 credit from the standard parking fee while trying out the electronic payment system through Christmas.

To use the new Parkmobile system, customers can register for free at www.parkmobile.com or download the mobile app. Once registered, they can use the mobile app, the internet, or a toll free number to pay for parking. After setting up the account, customers can immediately start using the system with their registered mobile phone. They can also select the option to receive alerts and reminders 15 minutes prior to expiration of their parking session, according to a release.

“This technology offers customers a new and better way to pay for parking," said said Cherie Fuzzell, CEO of Parkmobile USA, Inc., in a release.

The new program is offered citywide at the more than 400 parking meters in the city.

On Saturdays in the Village, there is free parking in surface lots.
