This Week in Grosse Pointe: Jan. 23

A few events happening this week in Grosse Pointe from council meetings to school board and more.

Officials in the Grosse Pointes will be busy this week. Here are a few events to know about this week:

1. The Board meets tonight. This is the first meeting with new members Dan Roeske and Lois Valente, who will be officially sworn in to start the meeting. Board members will begin with an informal work session that will address strategic district planning.

  • The hiring of Michael Jon Dean as new Superintendent Tom Harwood's replacement for the assistant superintendent of human resources.
  • The update of the art curriculum, which was presented to the board in December by three art teachers within the district who reviewed and updated the curriculum in part to reflect technology in art.
  • Harwood's goals for 2012 as the superintendent.
  • The district's goals, which did not pass last month in a split vote.

2. The council meets beginning at 7 p.m. Monday. On the agenda are several presentations, including:

  • One by Wayne County Community College.
  • One from the city assessor about land value changes.
  • One from the director of public safety presenting the annual report.

The council will also be asked to approve a grant for a garbage truck. Council will also have a closed session related to ongoing litigation.

3. The council will meet beginning at 7:30 p.m. On the agenda are a variety of routine items. The council will vote on a contract for inspections that must be done in homes to maintain requirements for safe drinking water laws. The contract is for three years and is being requested by the Director of Public Services Joseph Ahee, who says his department has lost five full time employees in four years and simply does not have the staffing to keep up with the required inspections. The total contract is for $26,100 over three years and includes 264 inspections.

4. The council will also meet beginning at 7 p.m. Monday. Several notable items will be discussed or voted upon by council, according to the agenda, including:

  • An that includes purchasing equipment as one unit rather than five; training all of the public safety officers together for fighting fires; and establishing a board to implement an automatic aid response for fires.
  • A resolution to allow the Board of Review to accept written protests on property assessements.
  • Committee appointments, which were originally scheduled for last month but were so residents are aware of vacancies and possibilities to volunteer.

5. finance committee will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday to discuss a budget forecast for the fiscal year 2012/2013. Also on the agenda is discussion about utility billing policies related to hardship and plumbing problems on private property.
