Garage Variances Granted by Grosse Pointe Shores Council

Council unanimously approved two zoning variances for new residents on Lake Shore Road that allow housing of six cars in two garages.

unanimously approved two zoning variances for new owners of 910 Lake Shore Road Tuesday. The council's approval follows the approval by the Planning Commission in February and March.

The first variance allows the new owners, Richard and Jennifer Perry, to build a new three-car garage on the lot—a plan for which Perrys received neighbors' support. The second variance is related to the continued use of an existing detached three-car garage to house cars.

The Shores has a limit on the number of garage bays, but the Perrys are classic car collectors and wish to have six bays to house their collection. Originally the planning commission approved the construction of the new garage with the plan that the existing garage would be converted to another use.

Council also discussed WOW Internet, Cable & Phone providers. Council members have received questions and requests from resident related to having more options for such services. The Shores restrictions on door-to-door sales is the reason WOW will not come into the city.

City Manager Brian Vick told council members his continued conversation with WOW representatives has not altered the company's decision. Councilman Brian Geraghty questioned whether WOW would consider it if residents who have interest in their services could fill out a release form allowing the door-to-door contact, but Vick said WOW specifically refused such an offer.

One resident spoke briefly at the end of the meeting to share his displeasure with the Shores policy that is restricting WOW from offering its services to the city. He is unhappy with the service he's currently receiving and doesn't have another option.
