Woods Increases Pay Range For City Assessor Job

The increase in potential pay is intended to widen the pool of candidates for the position.

Woods Treasurer/Comptroller Dee Ann Irby reposted a job ad Tuesday in her search for a city assessor. This time, the pay range for the position is higher, in hopes of getting a bigger pool of candidates.

Irby sought permission from City Council Monday night for the change, explaining the first ad netted only four applicants and some questioned the level of responsibility compared to the original pay offered.

The original pay range was from $45,000 to $53,000. Council approved Irby's request to increase the range to $60,000 to $64,000, with the requirement that she return to council with her final selection for final approval.

Irby agreed and reposted the ad Tuesday.

She explained that part of the role is to not only do assessment work, but also to sign off on all of the assigned tax values, certifying values are appropriate and following legal guidelines.

The certification puts the person's license at risk if any problem arises, which is why higher pay makes the job more attractive, Irby said Tuesday.

The former assessor, Judy Harrington, retired in late December after 17 years in the position, Irby said. The city has been looking for her replacement since early December. Although the full-time position is vacant, the workload is not piling up, Irby said.

A part-time assessor brought on by the city to help with the transition has been working more and another city employee has also been helping out, Irby said. This is typically a busy time of year for the office, so Irby is eager to fill the position, she said.

Applications are being accepted at the municipal offices until 4 p.m. Jan. 28. For more information about the job, read the ad. The city has requested no phone call inquiries.
