16 Schools in Grosse Pointe Earn Green Status

Michigan Green Schools awarded 16 buildings in the Grosse Pointes the Green School designation for 2012. All of the schools have been recognized for multiple years.

Most schools in the Grosse Pointes are making efforts to be environmentally friendly, according to the recent list of those designated "green" for the 2011/2012 school year by Michigan Green Schools.

The schools must earn at least 10 of 20 possible points to receive the Green School status and are given a level based on their point value. The levels are identified by different shades of green.

Points are earned by having a recycling program for bottles, paper and other materials, such as old cell phones and electronics; using alternative energy; incorporating environmentally resposible behavior into curriculum; hosting a gardening program; celebrating Earth Day; and more.
