Defer to Reopen Wednesday After Pipe Repair

Students are expected to return to class Wednesday at Defer Elementary School after having an unexpected day off Tuesday due to a broken pipe that flooded a second floor classroom.

A leaky pipe that burst late Monday at was repaired Tuesday and students should report to school as usual Wednesday, Grosse Pointe Public Schools spokeswoman Rebecca Fannon said.

The pipe burst and flooded a second floor classroom and a closet below on the first floor, Fannon said, leading to . Officials believed the pipe was leaking and went to work on it late Monday. During the work, the pipe burst, she said.

While officials have not yet determined the estimate in damages, Fannon said school employees believe it will not be much because the area impacted was small.

The employees working on the pipe Monday night contacted Superintendent Tom Harwood, who visited the school then. Principal Karen Sullivan began calling parents to cancel school for Tuesday.

Employees had to shut off water to the entire building late Monday and all day Tuesday, Fannon said. A plumber came to the building Tuesday to perform the repair, she said.
