Diamond's Competitive Light Shines

Grosse Pointe South sophomore confident in net as Blue Devils win the girls state hockey title.

I saw Anastasia Diamond minutes before she took the ice for the state championship game with her Blue Devils against Ann Arbor Pioneer last Sunday. I asked her how she was feeling.

“I’m ready,” Diamond said, smiling almost wildly. “We’re so ready.” 

She had an air of confidence that you don’t always see during a state championship pre-game chat, especially from a sophomore.

That confidence helped lead her team to a . 

"I feel that Anastasia demonstrated great composure and mental toughness by making several key stops in the final game after we went down 1-0,” Grosse Pointe South varsity coach Joe Provenzano said. "Anastasia is a very competitive player and throughout the playoff run, she consistently was able to make the big saves that allowed our team to remain focused and maintain momentum."

During the season and playoffs, Diamond had 332 saves against 360 shots on goal and registered nine shutouts. She helped the team to a sweet 19-3-1 overall record.

"Anastasia has a very positive attitude on and off the ice, and consistently used her competitiveness to support, encourage and push her teammates,” said Provenzano.

    The newest song on my iPod is "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga.

    My favorite teacher is my biology teacher Mrs. Rothenbuhler. She takes time to explain the material and makes sure you have a good understanding. She also has a bunny named Zoe that runs around the classroom and bunnies are awesome.
  3. Please list three words that best describe you.
    Competitive, weird, funny
  4. Where is your favorite vacation spot?
    I don’t have a favorite vacation spot. I like to go some place different every time I vacation.
  5. What does the word “team” mean to you?
    To me, the word “team” means a family that shares a common goal and supports you in achieving that goal.
