Art Classes for Kids

Indulge your child's creative side with a drawing or watercolor class at Grosse Pointe Art Center. Register by calling the Art Center at 313-821-1848 or drop in to sign up.

Two children's art classes -- Drawing for Kids I & II and Watercolor for Kids -- are geared toward youths ages 7-14. Both classes are held Monday afternoons; parents and children can choose which medium they prefer to school in. Roselyn Rhodes is teaching both courses.

The drawing class focuses on the basics -- groping lines, contour lines, crosshatch, shading, negative space, composition and color theory. Drawing I will work in graphite pencil, charcoal, colored pencil and oil pastel.  Drawing II will add pastel, micron pens and collage.

The watercolor class allows students to have fun with the medium and learn techniques, including controlling the "wet" and "dry" of the paper, learning color mixing and glazing. Students will experiment with texturing techniques and incorporate other materials into the projects (tissue paper, wax crayon, resist, salt, etc.) to achieve a multitude of effects. Composition and drawing will be emphasized.
