GPN Students Lead Community Efforts to Commemorate 9/11 by Placing 2,977 American Flags
Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan – September 11, 2012 – The Grosse Pointe North Chapter of Young Americans for Freedom is leading the effort to properly commemorate the September 11th terrorist attacks by placing 2,977 American flags for each of the victims who lost their lives that day. This is the second year GPN-YAF is putting on this event in which all are asked and invited to participate. We must honor those who died on that dreadful day, and never forget the unconscious sacrifice they made.
Throughout the day students, during their social studies classes, will place nearly 3,000 flags in the ground, one for each victim killed in the attacks.

“When extremists tried to dampen our morale on this day 11 years ago, we as Americans became more united behind our values,” says Strobl. “The memorial opens students’ eyes to why we must never forget the innocent lives lost and we must never forget how fortunate we are to live in the free world.”
Vice-Chair Tom Rafaill points out that the project is a way for those who did not understand the tragedy at the time to reflect.
“Those who were old enough, will always remember, and will never forget the attacks made on American soil by extremists. Those who are young have heard about it, but may not truly be able to comprehend the devastation that left the greatest nation on earth speechless” says Rafaill.
Along with the memorial, Young Americans for Freedom is sponsoring a school-wide moment of silence when the first tower of the world trade center fell.
The 9/11 Never Forget Project is part of a national effort part of Young America’s Foundation and GPN Young Americans for Freedom. We hope hoping other schools in the community will follow Grosse Pointe North’s and Grosse Pointe South’s lead in commemorating the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks.
