Gafa to Serve as Grosse Pointe School Board Treasurer

The Grosse Pointe Public School Board unanimously appointed trustee Judy Gafa as its treasurer to fill the position recently vacated by Brendan Walsh.

The Grosse Pointe Public School Board voted unanimously this week to appoint Judy Gafa to serve as the board's treasurer for the remainder of the calendar year.

The board needed to select a new treasurer after the unexpected immediate resignation of Brendan Walsh in late March. He had been the board's treasurer for several years. He left amidst the budget planning process for the 2013/14 fiscal year.

In a special meeting this week, trustee Dan Roeske nominated Gafa to fill the position. His nomination quickly gained support and a unanimous vote from fellow board members.

Trustee Tom Jakubiec said he believed Gafa was a good choice for the position before all the members voted.

In addition, Board President Joan Dindoffer asked Gafa and new board member Brian Summerfield to serve on an audit committee as well. The audit committee works with the financial auditors who assess the district's finances each year.

Gafa said after the meeting she was honored to have been nominated. She said she is happy to serve in the position until January when the board reelects officers. She believes there may be another board member well-suited for the position next year.

Mostly up-to-date on the budget, Gafa said she'll be gathering some materials from Assistant Superintendent of Business Affairs Chris Fenton to ensure she has all of the most recent information.

A budget for the 2013/14 fiscal year must be approved by late June to begin July 1. Gafa was the president of the board last year and has been on the board for five and a half years.
