GP Schools Host Kindergarten Informational Night

Parents of children who will enter kindergarten next school year are encouraged to attend informational sessions Thursday night held at each of the Grosse Pointe Public School elementary buildings.

officials will offer parents of children who are slated to begin kindergarten next school year a glimpse into curriculum, a typical day and more Thursday night during informational sessions. 

The session begins at 7 p.m. at each of the district's 10 elementary schools. Parents are encouraged to attend without their children. The district holds events closer to the end of this school year and over the summer to allow the introduction of the future student to the school. 

Superintendent Tom Harwood said the event Thursday is an important tool for parents, who are offered a tour of the school, a glimpse into the curriculum and what a typical school day includes for a kindergarten.

Teachers and administrators from each of the schools will be on-hand for the presentations, information and questions. 

Full-day kindergarten is offered at every elementary school in the district and the half-day program will be held at for the 2012/13 school year.

Officials begin the introduction process to parents now in hopes have obtaining a good estimate on enrollment numbers. The district determines its staffing levels based on projected enrollment, and enrollment packets will be available Thursday.

Harwood said kindergarten is one of the harder grades to predict for enrollment.

The district is requesting enrollment packets be submitted to the district by May 4 to help officials make the best prediction, according to a written release from spokeswoman Rebecca Fannon. She also urges parents who are not sure whether their child will attend Grosse Pointe Public to still contact the district.
