Grosse Pointe Public School Board Approves Additions to Special Education Staff

The additional staff is necessary after the district discovered more students who are in need of special education services.

One full-time teacher and five classroom assistants will be added to the staff after the board unanimously approved their positions Monday.

The six positions are the result of additional funding the district received for special education instruction after it discovered it has more students eligible for special education services than estimated for the school year, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Tom Harwood told the board Monday.

All of the new employees began with the district in mid-November and are placed at schools through the district, including , , and Elementaries, and . The classroom assistants are: Suzanne Babcock, Marianne Fannon, Fatin Graham, Roderick McLeod and Vicki Minetola.

The new teacher, Amy Johnson, is stationed at South High Schoool, according to the monthly human resources report submitted to the board.

In addition, the board approved the hiring of two custodians--one for each and South high schools. The new custodians, Cory Florence and Joann Smith, replace custodians who resigned from the district, according to the report.

Florence began work Nov. 14 while Smith began Monday.
