Grosse Pointe School Orchestras Earn Ratings

South High School earned 27 first place ratings and 11 second place ratings in a state solo and ensemble event.

Grosse Pointe South High School Band and Orchestra sent 38 events to Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association State Solo & Ensemble Festival at Farmington Hills Harrison High School.

This annual event featured high school students across the State of Michigan who had previously earned First Division ratings at District Solo and Ensemble Festival in January.

South High School had a total of 27 events earn a First Division (Excellent) rating and 11 events earn a Second Division (Good) rating:

Two of three Grosse Pointe Public School orchestras also competed earlier in March at another Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association festival and qualified for the state festival, according to James Gross, the band director at South and Pierce.

The orchestras competed in Clawson in March.

South High School's Symphony Orchestra and Pierce Middle School's 7/8 Orchestra earned straight First Division ratings of excellent and qualified for State Festival.

Both orchestras earned straight First Division ratings in both performance and sight-reading. They also received all A’s in the five adjudicated performance categories including: tone, rhythm, technique, intonation and interpretation.

South High School's Concert Orchestra also competed earning a Second Division rating of good.
