Kindergarten Parents Must Sign Waiver for Children by June 1 for Grosse Pointe Public Schools

A waiver form must be signed by those parents with students who will be enrolled in kindergarten for the 2013/14 school year and turning five between Nov. 1 to Dec. 1. Without the waiver the district is at risk of losing per pupil funding.

Grosse Pointe Public School officials are trying to reach out to parents of children who will be starting kindergarten next school year related to a waiver that must be signed.
The deadline for the waiver is June 1 and without it, the district will not receive its state allowance for those students, district spokeswoman Rebecca Fannon said.
The waiver is related to the rollback on the kindergarten enrollment cutoff date, which previously was Dec. 1. Michigan was one of the few states with such a late cutoff date and most states are in September.
Legislators made the change last year but rather than making it all at once, the date is being rolled back one month at a time until it reaches Sept. 1. For example, to enroll a child in kindergarten for the 2013/14 school year, the child must turn five on or before Nov. 1.
For the 2014/15 school year, the child must turn five by Oct. 1; the 2015/16 school year, it is Sept. 1.
Fannon said the district's pupil accounting official was alerted to the waiver that is required for those children who are turning five between Nov. 1 to Dec. 1 and are being enrolled in kindergarten who currently live in the Pointes.
Anyone moving into the district over the summer with a child who will be enrolled in kindergarten and is turning five from Nov. 1 to Dec. 1 have a deadline of Aug. 1, according to the pupil accounting official Karen Thoma.
Anyone with questions is asked to call 432-3083 or Karen Thoma at 432-3036.
