Meet Superintendent Candidate Michael Jon Dean

All three of the remaining candidates will have community receptions and their second interview with the Grosse Pointe Public Schools board July 11-12.

Michael Jon Dean, one of three men interviewing for the superintendent position, will have his community reception at 5:30 p.m. Monday July 11 in the student commons area. 

His second interview before the school board is the same day beginning at 8:30 p.m. in the Grosse Pointe South auditorium. 

Dean is the current assistant superintendent for human resources at Birmingham Public Schools. He's been in the position for 3 1/2 years.

Previously he worked as an elementary principal in Allen Park Public Schools, as a principal in Algonac Community Schools and as a high school math teacher in Algonac Community Schools and Detroit Public Schools, according to his application.

He is to earn his doctorate in education at Wayne State University in December. He holds an education specialist degree from Saginaw Valley University, his master's and bachelor's from Wayne State University.

Birmingham Public Schools has an enrollment of 8,100 students and a $105-million budget. Dean has previously served as a principal. He lives in the Grosse Pointes and has kids who attend a district elementary school–a point he emphasized during his first interview. 

The Grosse Pointe district is searching for a new superintendent to replace its longest-serving employee in the role, C. Suzanne Klein.  in December and will have been in the position for 15 years when she retires. 

All of the candidates completed their first interview with the school board in June. The district recorded the interviews and televised them after all were complete. Watch the interviews here.
