More Than 1,600 Without Power, Outage Closes Barnes

The school closed Thursday and will be closed again Friday, July 22. Grosse Pointe Public School officials are trying to find an alternative for the programs that meet at the center.

What began as 800-plus customers without power in the 48236 zip code has grown during the day to more than 1,600, according to DTE outage maps. 

Early in the day, the maps showed that 453 customers on and near the M streets the Farms were out of power. Shortly before 5 p.m., the outages expanded to incorporate about 1,300 customers in the Farms all the way from Mack to Lake Shore Road.

The restoration time is expected to be 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The outage caused to close , where many programs meet in the summer including . It will remain closed through Friday with all programs cancelled. District officials are trying to find a make up day for the programs. 

Residents and business owners reported experiencing along Mack Avenue in the Woods and in the M-street area of the Farms. While there were some scattered outages in the week, today's outage is the biggest and it comes on what the National Weather Service has said will be the worst day of the near-record-setting heat wave.

Temperatures were expected to reach close to 100 degrees today and after factoring in the heat index, the temperature would feel even hotter.

The hot conditions are expected to continue into the weekend but will begin cooling to the mid-80s by the weekend, according to the forecast.

Residents who live on the M streets have been among the hardest hit in all of the Grosse Pointes this summer with weather-related issues. During the following a record-setting rainstorm in May, the heaviest concentration of was there.

They have also been without power with more frequency this summer, although residents in experienced the early this month following another severe storm. They were .
