My Oh Meier! South Runner Makes Strides

Grosse Pointe South's track star Hannah Meier is undefeated in all races this season, defending state champion and breaking records left and right.

Hannah Meier.

If you haven't heard of this incredible runner hailing from yet, you will soon.

The sophomore Blue Devil is simply amazing, as she is undefeated in all races this season.  Last week Meier broke the school record in the 400-meter dash (56.3) and established nationally-ranked top five performances in the 1600m (4:50) and 800m (2:12).

Meier is also the defending state champion and state record-holder in the 800m and won the National Indoor Mile race (4:48) in New York City in February.

She helped the strong Grosse Pointe South team to a perfect 7-0 dual meet record and to two invitational championships (Michigan State University and Sterling Heights). At the 16-team Sterling Heights Invitational last weekend, Meier and her teammates Christina Firl, Haley Meier, Carmen Engel, Veronia Schacht, Caitlin Moore and Lily Pendy broke eight meet records dating back as far as 1980.

“Hannah is vital part of a phenomenal track team," Grosse Pointe South girls track coach Steve Zaranek said. "Her talent is matched only by her ability to be humble in victory and her ability to be a great teammate. The respect Hannah has earned statewide and even at the national level is astounding. She is, without a doubt, the most versatile track athlete in the state and her best performances are yet to come."

Grosse Pointe South will host the state regional meet on May 20 and will compete in the state championship meet on June 4.
