NBC's Education Nation Talk with Grosse Pointe Teachers

The Education Nation bus parked in front of Grosse Pointe North High School Monday as part of its tour of Michigan, helping raise awareness about issues in education both at the student and teacher levels.

The large blue tour bus parked outside of Grosse Pointe North High School Monday was a stark contrast to the brown brick building. The bus allowed NBC to feature some the district's teachers for an upcoming week of education focused programming for the network called Education Nation.

Teachers were interviewed about "what's right with education," according to an email from district spokeswoman Rebecca Fannon.

In addition to the bus being used for the interviews, it also served as drop off location for a book fundraiser to benefit United Way and low income schools.

Meanwhile, Grosse Pointe North High School also had its annual Cardboard Regatta going on in the pool at the opposite end of the building. While emceeing the event, North Principal Kate Murray said the regatta's founder/organizer, physics teacher Gary Abud, was among those who were to be interviewed later in the day.

Grosse Pointe is one of the many districts in the Detroit area that are being featured. The Detroit week is March 22 to 29. Among the features are a teacher town hall, student town hall and a Detroit summit.

All will be featured on NBC's local affiliate, WDIV Local 4 and live-streamed on EducationNation.com.

In addition to the bus being at North, Grosse Pointe teacher Susan Howey, who is at Trombly Elementary in the Park, was interviewed and featured for her use of technology with her students.

Two years ago, Howey used technology in her classroom to take her fourth graders to Mount Kilimanjaro. Then last year, Howey was recognized with a district award for her efforts in the classroom specifically related to technology.

Grosse Pointe Patch will update information about all of the teachers featured as part of Education Nation as interviews are released.
