Outlaw to Lead Grosse Pointe South Pending Board Approval

Matthew Outlaw, an assistant principal for Grosse Pointe North High School, is the candidate selected by the district to lead Grosse Pointe South High School. His promotion is dependent upon the Grosse Pointe School Board's approval Monday night.

Matthew Outlaw is likely exchanging his Norseman gear for some from the Blue Devils. According to a human resources report for the Grosse Pointe Public School Board, Outlaw is the selected candidate to lead . 

The district's decision is pending officially until the school board votes Monday night during its routine monthly meeting. The district narrowed an applicant pool of about 100 to six for in-person interviews. Of those six, two were selected to proceed and completed last week at South.

The human resources report shows Outlaw is to make the change beginning Aug. 1. He will replace the school's in May following a being shared on school-issued computers and Blackberries. 

Outlaw is an assistant principal at  and previously worked as an assistant principal and athletic director at South. Before coming to Grosse Pointe Schools, he worked in Novi Schools. He taught social studies, Spanish and other subjects and was a coach. He left his position as dean of Novi High School when he came to Grosse Pointe.

Many of those who attended the community receptions last week said either of the candidates would have been an excellent choice.

He told the crowd last week the principal position is a job he's dreamed of and joked about his allegiance being with South since that's where he started with the district.

In addition to Outlaw, the board will also be voting on the appointment of an athletic director/assistant principal for North High School to replace Carmen Kennedy, who is leaving for a position in a nearby district. Kennedy's resignation is being submitted on the same human resources report in which the district is seeking Ben Bandfield to be her replacement.

The to ensure a smooth beginning to the fall sports season, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Tom Harwood previously told Patch.

Among all of the changes, the district is still looking for an assistant principal for Grosse Pointe South to replace Brandon Slone, who also resigned unexpectedly with Diver; and a principal for , whose current principal will be retiring in January. 

With all of the expected internal change and promotion–including Harwood being named the district's new superintendent upon the district will be continuing its search for administrators. 

Ads have not yet been placed for Harwood's current position as assistant superintendent of human resources or for Outlaw's current position at North. The district already named a principal for to replace Kathleen Satut, who is retiring, and the changes are likely to continue.
