Poupard Students, Staff Raise Money for Oklahoma Tornado Victims

Students, teachers and families raised more than $200 to help tornado victims of Moore, Oklahoma, through a can/bottle drive created by first grade teacher Carol Fraser.

Poupard Elementary School teacher Carol Fraser wanted to turn a tragedy that was causing some uneasiness into a lesson about helping others--even those who live far from Grosse Pointe.
Fraser is a first grade teacher who noticed some students were upset or nervous about what had happened to people living in Moore, Oklahoma, said Poupard's Andi Cline.
Fraser started a bottle and can collection to raise money for the victims of the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma giving students the opportunity to focus on how to help those in need, Cline said.
Large bins were placed throughout the school and the fundraiser turned into a community effort, Cline said, explaining bottles and cans are still being submitted.
Thus far more than $200 has been raised, Cline said. Fraser had to visit several area grocery stores to complete the bottle returns because she was maxing out the number each allows in one visit, Cline said.
In addition to helping students learn how they can have an impact on others who  are in need but don't live nearby, Fraser also taught math lessons around the fundraiser, Cline said.
The money will be donated to the Moore, Oklahoma tornado victims via the American Red Cross.
