Poupard Teacher's Pop Quiz: Will You Marry Me?

In the middle of a lesson, a Poupard teacher was asked a big question. (She said yes.)

Christy Heugh's third-graders recently learned an unforgettable love story.

On Friday, March 11, Heugh was teaching an economics lesson to her students when a surprise guest arrived. Her boyfriend Jesse Brady-Davenport stopped in, bearing a rainbow bouquet of 50 tulips–her favorite flower–plus a ring. He had just one question: Will you marry me?

Heugh was caught—happily—by surprise, and said yes on the spot. And while she was caught off guard, there were co-conspirators to keep it on the down-low.

Cindy LaRue, one of the office secretaries at the school, was roped into the happy conspiracy. She said Brady-Davenport “wanted to do something to surprise (Heugh).”

Brady-Davenport, an earth science teacher for Ferndale Middle School, consulted LaRue to make sure she would be there. Of course she became a little suspicious when Brady-Davenport and some Poupard staffers popped in during the lesson.

Heugh and Brady-Davenport live in Clinton Township, and it was sort of understood that a walk down the aisle would happen one day, but Heugh said, “I had no idea he was coming to my room.” After the big question, someone played “Going to the Chapel” over the intercom, and the happy news was announced to the whole school.

The third-graders were surprised as well. “The kids' reaction was priceless,” Heugh said. One thought Heugh and Brady-Davenport were automatically married on the spot. Another wanted to know if they were having cake. One other child chimed up that this was the best day of her life. “Me, too,” Heugh added.

Heugh said the following Monday the kids were still brimming with more questions, including if Heugh had a new last name already.

Not yet.

Heugh says a wedding is most likely to happen in May or June 2012.
