Tom Jakubiec Announces Departure From School Board

Board member Tom Jakubiec announced Monday that he will be leaving the elected body in the first quarter of 2014.

Grosse Pointe Public School System board member Tom Jakubiec announced Monday that he was leaving the elected body.

Jakubiec, of Grosse Pointe Woods, was first elected to the board in Nov. 2009 and made the announcement during the regularly scheduled meeting.

"It is my intent to transition off the board, probably within the first quarter," Jakubiec stated during the meeting. "I would encourage the community if you have an interest in stepping up to become involved, it is a great opportunity."

Jakubiec's was elected to to a four-year term, which was originally scheduled to end this year. But legislation changed school board elections to even years, and extended his term by one year with it scheduled to end Dec. 31, 2014

He stated that he has informed board president Joan Dindoffer of his intentions and work with the transition period. On the video replay of the meeting, an exact date and plans for naming Jakubiec's replacement were not stated.

Jakubiec added that when he ran, his focus was to make sure that there was sufficient dialogue on the board and there remove special interests from the decision making process.

"It is a very rewarding, and sometimes challenging, position," he said. "I have had the honor and privilege to represent the community."
