Boy Scouts of America Pack 85 members registered their cars Wednesday for Friday's annual derby.

THURSDAY: Friday night children and adults will fill the gym of for the annual Pinewood Derby race by Pack 85 of the Boy Scouts of America.

The competitors have been working on their cars for days, if not weeks, and some even had to make last minute adjustments Wednesday before weighing in. The cars, which start out as a block of wood, are not to exceed 5 ounces. 

The event is open to the public and is expected to draw a quite a crowd, said Mike Caruso, Pack 85 cub master.

According to the Boy Scouts of America website, the derby, which is held by troops throughout the country, is meant to build teamwork, creativity, sportsmanship and friendship. 

A variety of awards will be given following the derby. Some include: the fastest car, the faster car, best in show, best detail, most colorful, most patriotic and most futuristic.
