Maire Elementary School fourth grader Imran Mihas is competing with four other elementary students from across the country in a cooking competition put on Sodexo.

The Future Chef competition required students to create a healthy salad recipe in hopes of focusing on positive food choices. More than 5,000 students nationally participated in the competition, which began within each school district that contracts its food services with Sodexo.

The public will determine the winner by voting online. Voting is open through Tuesday April 30. Voting does not require any personal information and takes just a moment.

He also has a homemade salad dressing that includes lemon juice, olive oil, honey, garlic, cumin powder and salt and pepper.

Mihas' mother, Izmira Mihas, said her son had only ocassionally helped with cooking at home leading up the competition. He found out about the competition and wanted to give it a try and now that he's done so well, his interest is growing, she said.

Mihas competed against other students in the Grosse Pointe Public School district first. Then he was one of 27 students who particpated in a regional competition before being choosen to compete at the national level against four others.

The other students are from Naperville, IL, Camas, WA, Colorado Springs, CO, and Providence, RI.

The participants had to create a video showing how to make their recipe, which was part of what judges considered in determining winners.
