You're Invited: Kindergarten Info Night

Grosse Pointe Public Schools will host an informational night Thursday for parents of future kindergarteners. Each of the district's elementary schools will host its own meeting, which begins at 7 p.m.

The Grosse Pointe Public School System will host an informational night for parents of children who will start kindergarten during next school year Thursday Jan. 24 beginning at 7 p.m.

Each school will host its own meeting, during which parents will receive information about registration, the skills children should possess upon entering kindergarten and more.

According to the district website, each school's website will have more information about the meeting.

The district also provides a variety of resources on its website for parents, including frequently asked questions, the registration process and forms

Children must be 5 years old by Nov. 1, 2013 to register for kindergarten in the 2013/14 school year.

Kindergarten is one of the biggest challenges for the district in planning for budget purposes because the numbers of children who will enroll are unknown. The budget process is completed before registration is closed, making budget planning somewhat of an estimate based on the number of students registered at that point plus projections.

The district encourages parents to register their students earlier rather than later to ensure per pupil funding and other budgetary matters are handled as accurately as possible given the timeline.

The district has had to make changes at the beginning of the school year due to changes in enrollment that happened in the days leading up to the first day, including adding staff.
