216 Boats in 2011 Race to Mackinac

The race begins at 11:30 a.m. Saturday July 23 and involves 216 boats from as close as Grosse Pointe and Port Huron all the way to Chicago.

More than 200 boats will set sail today for the 2011 Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race with crews from throughout the metro area and beyond. 

The race started in 1925, making this year the 87th race. It's also the longest-running freshwater race around the world, according to Bayview's website–the hub for all race information. 

The site also contains YellowBrick tracking of the boats, which allows GPS tracking and mapping of each boat throughout the race. There is also a mobile version for iPhones and iPads for those who want to check the status when a computer is not accessible.

According to the race participants list, there are 48 boats racing from the Grosse Pointes spread across all divisions. Most are from the metro area but there is at least one each from Zurich, TX and Lake Geneva, WI.
