Grosse Pointe Gymnasts Head to State Meet

The Grosse Pointe United gymnastics team finished third at the regional meet to qualify for the state finals on Friday in Grand Rapids.

The Grosse Pointe United gymnastics team will return to the state finals for the second straight year after finishing third on Saturday at the regional meet.

Grosse Pointe finished with a team-record regional score of 139.725 to edge Livonia by .05 points for third place and the final berth in the state finals.

Canton won the event, and Plymouth Salem finished second.

Grosse Pointe will join Canton and Plymouth Salem at the state finals on Friday at 2 p.m. at Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills.

To advance, Grosse Pointe started strong on the balance beam with Caitlin Gaitley (7.850), Ashley Krynski (8.375), Emily Griffith (8.575), Sarah Fentin (8.575) and Madi Kaiser (8.8) leading the way.

Grosse Pointe then posted four scores of 9.0 or higher on the floor exercise behind Fentin (9.075), Kaiser (9.15), Aubryn Samaroo (9.2) and Emma Abessinio (9.3).

On the vault, Fentin posted a score of 8.55, Fran Kay had a 8.6, Kaiser a 8.75 and Abessinio a 8.85.

In the final event of the day, the bars, Samaroo posted a 8.15, Fentin a 8.4, Kaiser a 8.575 and Abessinio an 8.8.

Other competitors for Grosse Pointe included Madison Bush, Anna Brucker, and Meagan Curran.

Abessinio (bars, floor) and Kaiser (bars, beam) also qualified to the individual event finals Saturday at noon.
