Grosse Pointe North's Salazar Advances at State Wrestling Finals

Salazar shakes off nerves in first bout to advance in 5-2 decision over Caledonia's Spencer Plattner on Thursday in the first round.

The individual wrestling state finals kicked off on with hundreds of wrestlers from around the state hitting the mat.

senior Patrick Salazar didn't do anything fancy in his first match of the tournament against Spencer Plattner from Caledonia, but that was his game plan.

"I wanted to be more defensive," Salazar said. "I didn't expect to be perfect in this match."

Salazar admitted to being a little nervous in his first appearance at The Palace. He ended up taking advantage of a mistake Plattner made at the end of the second to take a 4-2 lead going into the third round. He ended up winning 5-2.

"It feels incredible," he said, smiling. "It almost doesn't feel real."

Salazar is wrestling in the 119 pound bracket. He'll face Austin Eicher of Hartland in the quarterfinals. Eicher won 8-2 over Wyandotte Roosevelt senior Cade Barwig.
