Grosse Pointe South Girls Hockey Defeats North in a Thriller at Comerica Park

Grosse Pointe South girls hockey team topped Grosse Pointe North 5-4 in a game that was played on an outdoor rink at Comerica Park.

The latest game in the cross-town rivalry between Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South was played out in the cold, and on the ice, at Comerica Park.

Grosse Pointe South topped North 5-4 Wednesday in back-and-forth girls hockey game that wasn't decided until the final minutes of the third period.

South jumped to an early lead 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Gennie Martin.

A flurry of goals were scored in the second period with South goals by Tenley Shield and Sydney Stann, and North Elizabeth Gallagher and Caroline Bock.

Going into the third, South held on to a 3-2 lead.

South jumped ahead 4-2 with an early goal by Tenley Shield, but North battled back to the tie the game with a goal by Lindsay Gallagher by 3:50 to go in the game. But with 2:25 to go in the game, Ellie Flom netted the game winning goal despite a late flurry of shots by North.

The game was part of a series of high school, college and minor league games that comprise the Hockeytown Winter Festival at Comerica Park. The games lead up to the Alumni Classic Dec. 31 at the park.
