Grosse Pointers to Take the Ice at Comerica Park
Grosse Pointe North, and retired Detroit Red Wings with ties to the Grosse Pointes, will take to the ice at Comerica Park in the coming weeks.
When crews complete an open-air ice rink on the field at Comerica Park in the coming days, a full slate of games featuring high school teams, men's leagues and NHL alumni will take the ice.
And when the puck drops, the Grosse Pointes will be represented.
De La Salle will Grosse Pointe North at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23. Ticket details have not yet been release.
In addition to the high school games, Comerica Park will host the Great Lakes Invitational on Dec. 27 (Michigan State vs. Michigan Tech at 3:30 p.m. and Western Michigan vs. Michigan at 7 p.m.) and Dec. 28 (consolation game at 3:30 p.m. and championship game at 7 p.m.); an Ontario Hockey League double-header on Dec. 29 (Windsor Spitfires vs. Saginaw Spirit at 1:30 p.m. and London Knights vs. Plymouth Whalers at 5 p.m.); and an American Hockey League contest between the Toronto Marlies and Grand Rapids Griffins at 5 p.m. Dec. 30. Then on Dec. 31 the Detroit Red Wings alumni will take on the Toronto Maple Leafs alumni.
There will be at least three players in that game with ties to the Grosse Pointes including:
- Kirk Maltby, a retired left winger and current Grosse Pointe resident, was part of the 'Grind Line' and won four Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings during his 16 seasons in the NHL.
- Jimmy Carson, a Grosse Pointe Woods-native, played for the Red Wings between 1989-1993.
- Steve Yzerman, who won three Stanley Cups as a player with the Red Wings and one as a vice-president, lived in Grosse Pointe Farms.
