University Liggett to Induct 7 into Athletics Hall of Fame

Six athletes and a coach are the members of the Class of 2012 for the University Liggett Alumni Athletics Hall of Fame.

University Liggett will induct seven people into its Alumni Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 5.

The seven honorees in the Class of 2012 include six athletes and a coach, according to a release from the school.

  • Bob Wood played football, basketball, tennis and baseball and is a 1959 graduate of Grosse Pointe University School. Wood’s tennis teams won state championships in his sophomore, junior and senior years, and he also won the doubles state championship with partner George Haggarty. Wood was the athletic director, tennis coach and freshman adviser at University Liggett for 37 years.
  • Art Getz was a three-year varsity player on the football, basketball and baseball teams, and he is a 1967 graduate of the University School. Getz led the football team to an undefeated season his junior year, when he also set school records for completion percentage, yardage and touchdown passes.
  • Allen Taber played hockey, football and baseball and is a 1980 graduate. He led the hockey team to a state title in 1980.
  • Kevin Crociata played baseball, basketball and cross country, and he is a 1990 graduate. Crociata was a member of the 1990 Michigan East All-Star Team, and he helped the basketball team win four league championships.
  • Heather Heidel Petty played tennis, soccer and hockey, and is a 1993 graduate. Heidel Petty helped University Liggett when a state championship in tennis in 1990, and she earned All-American recognition from USA Today. Heidel Petty also held the school record for goals in soccer, and she was a MVP on the hockey team. Heidel Petty played college tennis and soccer at Kansas.
  • Lauren Ealb played soccer, tennis and hockey, and is a 2002 graduate. Ealb scored a school-single season record 46 goals in 2000, and she holds the school career record with 139 goals for the soccer team. Ealb also earned all-state honors in tennis and hockey.
  • Muriel Brock coached girls athletics for 36 years at University Liggett, and she founded the Liggett summer camps.

The Alumni Athletics Hall of Fame was created last year to honor the athletes and coaches at University Liggett and Grosse Pointe University School.

The event begins with a reception at 5 p.m. and the ceremony starts at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s Manoogian Arts Wing.
