Viewfinder: Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League Parade

More than 1,000 parents, grandparents and others braved the threat of rain to support the annual Grosse Pointe Woods~Shores Little League Parade Sunday.

More than 1,000 area residents braved the threat of rain Sunday lining the streets to watch the annual Grosse Pointe Woods~Shores Little League Parade.  The parade ushered in the 2011 season and was followed by opening day games for players aged 5-12. Approximately 490 boys and girls are enrolled for the 2011 season, for which there are: Majors, AAA, AA, Collegiate, and Instructional levels based on age and skill.

Following the parade down Mack Avenue and into Ghesqueire Park, Woods and Shores Mayors Robert Novitke and Jim Cooper ceremonially threw out the first pitch. Other notable guests were Woods council members Vicki Granger, Todd McConaghy, Joseph Sucher,  Arthur Bryant and Municipal Judge Theodore Metry.

Grosse Pointe Woods~Shores Little League President Dick Borland  also addressed the crowd of players and supporters, thanking and crediting the league’s success to the many volunteers who provide many hours of service to the children and the organization.

Borland went on to state the league’s primary goal, “…To make sure each player has fun, improves their abilities and enjoys the spirit of competition. It is our responsibility as parents, coaches and league officials to teach our children lessons about sportsmanship, fair play and teamwork. Always lead by example and encourage your children to enjoy baseball and the camaraderie of our great league.”
