Woods Native Leads Western to GLI Title

Grosse Pointe Woods native Justin Kovacs scored the game winning goal in overtime Saturday to give Western Michigan University the Great Lakes Invitational title.

Kovacs, a junior forward, scored the goal on a rebound against Michigan Tech at 2:01 into overtime Saturday after Shane Berschbach put a shot on net, according to Western Michigan University

"It’s nice getting it for the tournament winner. I just saw one of our players celebrating and then I knew it went in,” he told the Western Michigan University sports website

He leads the team with nine goals, and improved the Broncos to a 9-8-3 record with the win.

Kovacs is a 2009 graduate of Grosse Pointe North.
