Thank you State Tax Commission A year ago, May 9, 2011, we spoke to the city council in Grosse Pointe Park about the violations of the Open Meetings Act and the Property Tax Act by the March 2011 Board of Review. We got vehement denials from the city attorney. We got silence and inaction from the city council. Given the intransigence of the city officials, we reluctantly reported the violations to Lansing. The State Tax Commission, appointed by the governor, is responsible for the administration of Michigan’s property tax system. The Commission and its staff issue rules and regulations, and are responsible for training and supervision of the assessors, county equalization departments, and the Boards of Review. Letters we received from …

Three former Grosse Pointe Woods city council members share their opinion about the Headlee Override officials intend to seek approval on from voters in November.
March 30, 2012 Editor: Our friends and neighbors in Grosse Pointe Woods will be wise to keep their eyes open and a tight grip on their purse strings when the Woods’ mayor and council come begging for a blank check for several million dollars in Headlee Override money. Millions? Yep. The city’s treasurer says a “Yes” vote approving the Nov. 6 Headlee Override will cost Woods’ taxpayers a minimum of $2.1 million--in the first year alone. And overrides are forever. A word to the wise: There’s no such thing as a temporary tax. A blank check? Aren’t the mayor and council promising to use the 3.6 mill Headlee Override windfall to make repairs to our crumbling residential roads? Read the fine print, please. Under Headlee, which was designed to …

We're enjoying, if that's the right word, a record-setting March – for a few more days, at least.
It's another week for bare limbs, open-toe footwear and iced beverages. It's also time to consider indoor climate control. The letters A-C are being heard in households, shops and offices – sometimes along with a whirring sound that signals chill out. Though the calendar says first week of spring, the temperature – above 80 again Thursday – says midsummer. Government meteorologists flipped on air-conditioned comfort this week at the regional National Weather Service branch in White Lake. "It's also on at my house and has been since yesterday," Debra Elliott said when Patch checked Thursday. She and colleagues posted data confirming this month is a record-setter: But we don't need stats to sense something strange has sprung three weeks …
