Woods to Start Citizens Academy for Residents

In an effort to reach out to residents and business owners in Grosse Pointe Woods, the Director of Public Safety received the ok this week from council to start a citizens academy. Applications must be submitted and it will begin this fall.

Grosse Pointe Woods Director of Public Safety Andrew Pazuchowski wants to generate communication between his department and the residents and business owners in the city. This week he received the support of city council to begin a Citizen's Public Safety Academy that is slated to start this fall. The academy will accomodate 60 residents/business owners and will meet each Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. for six weeks. Woods City Administrator Al Fincham introduced the program to council, explaining that outreach and communication is needed to help bring more understanding and education about police work and firefighting to residents and business owners. Police Blotter: Thefts at 2 Private Clubs

Grosse Pointe Woods police are investigating the theft of four flag poles and 9 red and green flags from the Lochmoor Club's golf course. The maintenance manager reported the theft after discovering it early May 4. This type of theft has happened in the past but never to this extent. The poles and flags are valued at about $500, according to a report. The general manager of the Grosse Pointe Hunt Club filed a report with the Grosse Pointe Woods police as well regarding the theft of three swimming pool blocks from a storage area. The theft is believed to have happened between April 20 to May 3. Employees are checking security videos to see if they can find anything, according to a report. Gas Leak Repair Closes McMillan Road Thursday Afternoon in Grosse Pointe Farms

A residential gas leak lead public safety officers in Grosse Pointe Farms to shut down McMillan between Ridge and Muir for an hour Thursday afternoon.

McMillan Road between Ridge and Muir will be closed for about an hour Thursday afternoon to fix a residential gas leak, according to a Nixle alert. Public Safety officers in Grosse Pointe Farms said the repair would take about an hour. The gas company and officers were on the scene.

Police Blotter: Arrest in Business Burglary

Grosse Pointe Park police arrested a 46-year-old Detroit woman in a business burglary in which $100 was stolen. Katherine Buselmeier is charged with breaking and enterin a business. She is accused of breaking into a business in the 15000 block of Kercheval Avenue April 27 and stealing cash. During the investigation, detectives received a tip that led to her arrest, according to a report. Trustee of Estate Reports Items Missing Grosse Pointe Park police are investigating the disappearance of several items from a home in the 1400 block of Nottingham after an estate trustee reported them missing. The estate is in the care of a trustee following the death of a resident and the trustee noticed several items missing May 3. The items were removed…

Charity Basketall Game Draws Hundreds

The Grosse Pointe Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 102 donated $2,500 Tuesday to each the Grosse Pointe/Harper Woods Special Olympics and to Services for Older Citizens during the first charity basketball game with Detroit Lions.

About 800 people filled the stands of Grosse Pointe South's gymnasium Tuesday for a charity basketball game between the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 102 and a few of the Detroit Lions. The game included Special Olympics athletes, public safety officers, amputees using prosthetics and a few of the Detroit Lions. The game was started with Anita Baker singing the national anthem and during halftime, the Lions spread out in the gymnasium, posed for pictures and gave their signatures to the game attendees. One of the event organizers, City of Grosse Pointe Public Safety officer and FOP Lodge 102 President Joe Adams, said Tuesday the event was a success. New Date Set in Gentz Competency Hearing

The man charged with first degree murder in the strangulation death of Jane Bashara is scheduled to appear in court again June 11 after the competency hearing was rescheduled so reports may be completed.

The man undergoing evaluation for competency to stand trial in the strangulation death of Grosse Pointe Park's Jane Bashara is scheduled to appear in court again June 11. Joe Gentz, who is charged with first degree murder and conspiracy to committ murder in the January death of Jane Bashara, had been scheduled to appear earlier this month but the hearing was cancelled as officials continued completing reports. Gentz is being evaluated for his competency to stand trial and officials from the Forensic Center needed more time to complete the appropriate reports. The evaluation hearing has been rescheduled for June 11 in 36th District Court. Bashara's death is still under active investigation by the Grosse Pointe Park Department of Public …

Police Blotter: Money Scam, Burglary Reported

City of Grosse Pointe police are investigating a scam in which a resident lost $1,560. The resident contacted police after Western Union employees stopped a transfer of $2,400 believing the situation to be a scam, making the 70-year-old resident realize it was as well. He told police he was contacted two weeks prior alerting him that he won $2 million. He was asked to send money to two different accounts in order to receive his winnings, which he did. Then he was asked for the third payment, which is what Western Union officials stopped. Since the resident has received numerous calls regarding the money he was to have sent. He has contacted Comcast to track the phone calls he continues to receive and to change his phone number, according …

GP Police: Lock Vehicle Doors, Prevent Thefts

Police in the Grosse Pointes are urging residents to take valuable out of vehicles and to lock vehicles to deter thefts. A variety of investigations are underway in the Pointes related to such thefts.

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating the theft of a wallet from a vehicle parked in the 400 block of Bournemouth Road in which the thief already tried to use a credit card at a local gas station. The owner discovered the theft early Friday. Both of his vehicles, which were unlocked, had been opened and items were stolen, including his wallet, a pair of prescription sunglasses and a cell phone charger. The man had his driver's license, social security card and a debit card in his wallet, according to a report. Bank officials provided information the man about purchases that had already been made with the card since not being in his control. Burglar Kicks In Front Door on Kerby Road

Grosse Pointe Farms police are asking anyone who may have information to call 313-885-2627. Callers should ask for Detective John Walko.

Grosse Pointe Farms police are investigating a burglary in the 400 block of Kerby Road in which a television, jewelry, a watch and golf clubs were stolen Thursday. The front door of the home was kicked in, which is unusual, Farms Detective John Walko said. Typically on a busy street, burglars are not likely to enter through the front door, especially by kicking it in, Walko said. Doing so puts the burglar at higher risk for being seen by others, he said. The 50-year-old homeowner discovered the burglary about 2:15 p.m. Thursday upon arriving home. Carjackers Arraigned on 5 Felonies Each

The two men arrested earlier this week by police in Harper Woods and the Grosse Pointes will be arraigned this afternoon in 36th District Court on multiple felonies stemming from the attempted carjacking and shooting.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office announced formal charges Thursday against the two men arrested earlier this week by police in Harper Woods and the Grosse Pointes following an attempted carjacking and shooting at 8 Mile and Gratiot Avenue. The men, Ricardo Sanders, 25, and Steven Powell, 30, were arraigned in 36th District Court in downtown Detroit about 1 p.m. today. The men are each being charged with the following crimes: The men are accused of attempting to steal a car from a man and a woman who were traveling on Gratiot Avenue about 1:30 a.m. Monday.
