Ferry Educator Named A Top Teacher by Metro Parent

James Fisher has been a teacher for 21 years and this year's class nominated him for the award with the Metro Parent magazine.

James Fisher teaches the 4/5 Magnet program at Ferry Elementary School. It's his first year at Ferry—a change he finally made when he realized there would never be a good time to leave his former school, Monteith Elementary. Earlier this school year, Fisher noticed his students whispering and energetic one day at lunch. They were clearly "up to something," Fisher said, laughing now as he came to understand they were working together to nominate him for Metro Parent's Top Teacher Award. Being nominated, Fisher said, was an honor in itself. Then about two weeks ago, he received notification that he was one of the five chosen teachers from Michigan out of hundreds nominated. "To be nominated by students is such an honor," Fisher said. "It's …

GP Assistant Superintendent to Lead Clawson Schools

The Clawson school board voted unanimously to hire the Grosse Pointe Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Monique Beels to replace retiring Clawson Superintendent Cheryl Rogers.

The Clawson Board of Education voted Thursday night to hire Monique Beels as superintendent of the school district. Beels has been with Grosse Pointe Public Schools for two years as assistant superintendent for instructional curriculum, technology and assessment. Superintendent Cheryl Rogers announced in February that she would retire after five years of working in the district. Her retirement will be effective in June. Clawson board members met for about one hour Thursday to discuss the qualities, experience, references and school community feedback on Beels and finalist Gerald Jennex, who is superintendent of Capac Community Schools. About 20 people attended the meeting and applauded the board after it voted for Beels. Neither Beels or …

MDE Plans for New Online-Based Assessments

The Michigan Department of Education will implement the changes for the 2014-2015 school year.

Paper and pencil for statewide tests will soon be a thing of the past for Michigan students as they prepare to take a new online assessment detailed during a roundtable Monday by the Michigan Department of Education. The exam will replace the standardized MEAP and MME assessments in math, reading and writing, beginning during the 2014-2015 school year. The MEAP and MME assessments will still be given in science and social studies. But unlike the tests students are used to, the new statewide exam will not have a common set of questions. Subsequent questions will be determined based on how a student answers the previous one. A correct answer yields a harder one. An incorrect responds yields a easier question. The goal is to have students get…

Just the Facts: New Test to Replace MEAP

The new online assessment will replace the MEAP and MME tests in math, reading and writing beginning in the 2014-15 school year.

Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, students throughout Michigan will be given an online exam to test their knowledge of core subjects. The test replaces the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) and the Michigan Educational Assessment Progam (MEAP) in all subjects except social science and science. Called Smarter Balanced, the exam was produced by The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, a state-led effort to provide consistent and comparable standards, aligned to the Common Core State Standards, in English language arts, literacy and mathematics. Smarter Balanced recently released a Technology Readiness Tool for districts  to measure readiness to move to an online assessment program. Martineau said only about 6 percent of districts have taken …
