Grosse Pointe Farms Recognizes Officers, Residents

Several Grosse Pointe Farms Public Safety officers and a few residents received recognition Monday night for their work going above and beyond in their duties during 2012.

Saving a life by administering CPR; catching a purse-snatcher moments after the crime; identifying a man who collapsed while jogging and died; and detective work leading to the arrest of burglars are just a few of the reasons several Grosse Pointe Farms officers were recognized this week. Farms Director of Public Safety Dan Jensen announced the recipients of the 2012 departmental awards before city council to recognize officers for going above and beyond and performing well in stressful situations. Eleven officers and four residents were honored. Public Safety Officer Roger Wierszewski received a commendation for the arrest of a convicted felon armed with two weapons, one of which was loaded, who was driving while intoxicated. The man led …

City of Grosse Pointe: Fewer Crimes in 2012

The City of Grosse Pointe experienced a drop in the overall crime rate in 2012. In addition to fewer investigations, the department experienced a 15 percent drop in calls for service.

Officers in the City of Grosse Pointe responded and investigated fewer crimes in 2012 as compared to 2011, including a 7 percent decrease in those crimes classified as the most dangerous by the FBI, Department of Public Safety Director Stephen Poloni reported to city council this week. Poloni generally credits the drop to the "pro-active nature of the officers" during patrol, which is a deterrant, he said to Patch Friday. In addition to experiencing fewer crimes, the department received about 15 percent fewer calls for service at 4,508 in 2012 as compared to 5,322 in 2011. Poloni is the first of the directors of public safety in the Grosse Pointes to present his annual report on crime statistics. He said the numbers show that "Grosse …

How Will You Remember 2012?

2012 was filled with triumph and tragedy. With a new year approaching, tell us how you will remember the last 12 months.

How will you remember 2012? That’s the question Patch is asking this week as the year comes to an end. USA Today called 2012 the Year of the Cheater, citing separate scandals involving Lance Armstrong, Gen. David Petraeus and Olympic athletes. Time magazine named President Barack Obama the Person of the Year, and the New York Times posted its Year in Pictures, which included photos of the tragedy of the school shooting in Newtown, CT, and the devastation of superstorm Sandy. But we want to know what defined 2012 for you. Was it a moment in Michigan politics, such as when Gov. Rick Snyder signed right-to-work legislation? Was it a moment of triumph, such as the Detroit Tigers trip to the World Series? Or was it something else? How will you …

North Seniors to Hear Inspiring Speech at Graduation

Grosse Pointe North High School senior Tristan Mora will address her graduating class tonight with a speech about goodbyes, changes and the challenges ahead. She was selected to give the commencement speech from a group of applicants.

By Tristan Mora Grosse Pointe North Class of 2012 Accepted at Oxford University in England  "Good evening. I begin this speech with a greeting, one of the final salutations that we, the graduating class of 2012, will hear on this day that must ultimately culminate in goodbyes. There is much to be said with “goodbye,” which is the recognition of parting, of ending. For some of us it will be only until tomorrow or next week, and for others of us it will be an acknowledgement of a longer separation, it will resound solemnly with notes of forever. Not only will we leave Grosse Pointe North, maybe Grosse Pointe, even Michigan, and each other, but we will depart from a piece of ourselves. In only a short while we shall rise from our seats as men…

Would have been a superior speech: all the accolades for "mom", never a mention of her father without whom all things experienced would never have been possible.   more ›

Share Your Pics: Grosse Pointe Daddy-Daughter Dance

The joint Daddy-Daughter dance held by all of the five Grosse Pointes will begin in just a few hours at Grosse Pointe South. Upload photos of your special night to Patch's gallery.

The annual Daddy-Daughter dance begins at 7 p.m. tonight at Grosse Pointe South High School.  Intended to offer daughter's a special night with their dads, the event includes dancing, music and light refreshments. It is for girls age 12 and younger.  Each daughter will receive a wrist corsage upon checking in and the dance will end at 9 p.m. The director of parks and recreation from each of the five Grosse Pointes have joined forces to offer this as one community event instead of holding five separate dances. This is the second year the Pointes have offered it as a community wide event.  Upload a photo of you and your daughter dancing, posing together before leaving the house or just having fun at the annual event.

Photo Gallery: Winterfests in Woods, City

Grosse Pointe Woods and the City of Grosse Pointe held their annual winterfest celebrations Saturday at their respective parks.

Residents from Grosse Pointe Woods and the City of Grosse Pointe attended annual Winterfest celebrations Saturday afternoon in Lake Front Park and Neff Park. Residents enjoyed many activities, ranging from a cook-off in the Woods to curling for kids and ice carving at Neff. Despite the unseasonably warm temps thus far this winter, the events were a hit with kids from both cities, as well as adults looking for a good time and good food.
