As Grosse Pointe Public School Board members study the idea of changing high school scheduling from the current seven-period day to block scheduling, people familiar with the notion have mixed views on it. Grosse Pointe Patch readers took to Facebook to discuss the proposal after it was discussed at Monday night's board meeting. "I had block scheduling in HS and I found that I had a much easier transition to university scheduling than my peers," Brandie Lee-Mae wrote. "It also allowed me to earn college credits while in HS. Nothing will be perfect for everyone. It is a new world and we have to stay open to innovation in order to continue to compete." Grosse Pointe Public School Board members had many questions and requested hard data to support such a change. The recommendation is one of several the team has made regarding the high schools.
The organizer of the 21st Century High School Review Team presented a recommendation to the Grosse Pointe Public School Board Monday to change high school scheduling from the current seven-period day to block scheduling. In a block schedule, the students receive 90-minutes of instruction per class and attend a maximum of four classes per day. The classes are alternated by day and under the design presented Monday, students would have one period that would allow for advisory time with teachers. The review team, which is being headed up by Jon Dean, the district's assistant superintendent in instruction and human resources, was created to analyze how the districts high schools are performing in comparison to other like high schools. A committee created to review and analyze learning opportunities that would help Grosse Pointe Public Schools continue to compete with other like districts presented several recommendations Monday to the school board for their consideration.
The 21st Century High School Review committee suggested Monday to the Grosse Pointe Public School Board a variety of changes that they believe could enhance the learning opportunities of students to ensure they are competitive with students from like districts post graduation. The committee was created in the fall and tasked with evaluating areas the district could grow, change or adapt to ensure the district's high schoolers are competitive beyond the district and the program is benefitting all students. They were specifically not considering finances, adult needs or to seek change simply to make change--points highlighted Monday night.
