Nearly 300 airmen are scheduled to return to Selfridge Air National Guard Base Monday after a four-month deployment to Afghanistan.
Nearly 300 airmen from Selfridge Air National Guard are scheduled to return to Michigan Monday after a four-month deployment to Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan. While deployed, and serving with the 451st Air Expeditionary Wing, the men and women from Selfridge logged approximately 8,300 flight hours in 2,000 sorties, or flight missions, according to base officials. “The safe return of our Michigan Airmen is a very welcome way to begin the new year,” said Col. Some boxed-up comfort for military men and women is headed to Afghanistan from students, parents and teachers at Defer Elementary in Grosse Pointe Park. Besides the donations and volunteer hours put in by the Defer community, Grosse Pointers who made donations, purchased discounted coffee and showed up for special contribution days at Caribou Coffee last month also made possible the shipment of five boxes of coffee, jerky and hard candy for the 107th Red Devils Fighter Squadron. About 300 members of the Selfridge Air National Guard based unit deployed last month and will return in January.
