Grosse Pointe Woods' Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church's Pastor Gary Smetanka is named 'Monsignor' by Pope Benedict XVI.
GROSSE POINTE WOODS – Detroit Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron has announced that Pope Benedict XVI has conferred the title of “Monsignor” upon eight Detroit-area priests, including Gary Smetanka, pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea in Grosse Pointe Woods. A prayer service to commemorating this honor for all the new monsignors will be held at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 23, with a reception following. The honorary title of “monsignor” is given to Roman Catholic priests as a sign of appreciation and recognition of the service they have rendered, both locally and in the world. Pope John Paul II visited Metro Detroit 25 years ago and celebrated mass in the Silverdome. Did you see the Pope during his visit?
It was 25 years ago today Pope John Paul II completed a two-day visit to Michigan which included a visit to Hamtramck, delivering an address in Hart Plaza, meeting Detroit Tigers manager Sparky Anderson and celebrating a mass before more than 90,000 in the Silverdome. Mr. Robert Lee, I served as a Marine One crewchief during Pope John Paul ii visit to Detroit. IThe only pictures I have of the Pope boarding the heicopter at Detroit Metro are very blurry. I belive the photo's of me saluting the Pope were on the eveing of his arrival? I am certianly willing to pay for the photo's if you have them.
