A not guilty plea was entered Sunday on behalf of the 20-year-old Grosse Pointe Park man accused of firebombing the home of Gary and Janet Van Elslander Friday. He was arraigned on three felony charges before Judge Carl Jarboe.

Charles Patterson Kay, of Grosse Pointe Park, was arraigned Sunday on three felony charges related to the middle of the night crime in which a molotov cocktail was thrown through a kitchen window of the home in the 700 block of Whittier shortly before 3:30 a.m. The molotov cocktail partially ignited and a fire alarm at the house woke the homeowners. Bashara is scheduled to return to court May 7 for a preliminary exam. He is charged with: If convicted, Bashara faces mandatory life in prison on the first degree murder charge; up to life on each the conspiracy, solicitation and suborning counts; 15 years for witness intimidation; and five years for obstruction of justice. Grosse Pointe Park police arrested three men early Friday after being called to a car fire only to discover the owner on the porch of a vacant home recently burglarized. Harper Woods resident Lester Chambers has been arraigned on charges stemming from last Friday's shooting incident between Chambers and police at a home on Lancaster.
Harper Woods Police Chief Jim Burke released a Nixle report on Nov. 19 at 3:46 p.m. about the Nov. 16 shooting incident that put several Grosse Pointe Schools on lockdown just as they were about to end the school day. Police responded to a residence on Lancaster after receiving reports of gun shots from the home. Chambers fired a shotgun at police from inside his residence, police said. Mary A. Quinn has been ordered to not house any animals in her home after she made her first appearance Wednesday in Grosse Pointe Woods court on a felony charge of abusing more than 10 animals. More than 75 feral cats were removed from her home earlier this year following a complaint regarding a cat being stuck at the top of the garage door, which lead to the discovery of what police and animal rescuers have called "cat hoarding." A single felony count carrying a maximum penalty of up to four years in prison was approved by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office just a couple weeks ago. The cats were removed in early August. The third person involved with a burglary involving $1 million worth of jewelry was arraigned in the City of Grosse Pointe court. He faces up to life in prison because of his criminal history.
A third person was arraigned in the City of Grosse Pointe court late Friday in connection with the Sept. 3 burglary of a Lincoln Road home involving the theft of about $1 million worth of jewelry. Matthew S. Sedgeman, 19, of Detroit, is charged with second degree home invasion, larceny of $20,000 or more and with being a habitual offender. He is accused of actually breaking into the home through a window. The couple arraigned Thursday were accused of receiving the stolen jewelry and then trying to pawn it for cash. They were arrested when they attempted to cash a sizable check at a Chase Bank on Cadieux at Harper. The investigation continues by detectives. Two Grosse Pointe Park men pleaded not guilty Wednesday in court during an arraignment on felony charges stemming from the Aug. 2 raid of their Somerset Street home during which police seized numerous marijuana plants and growth operation materials. Matthew Chapoton, 31, and Randy Shelp, 36, are each charged with manufacturing 4 to 45 kilograms of marijuana and possession with intent to deliver marijuana. The first count is punishable by up to seven years in prison and up to $500,000 in fines. The second charge carries a term of up to four years in prison and up to $20,000 in fines.
