With opening day less than three weeks away, the Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League has had to shake up its teams. The Little League’s national organization ruled that the Woods-Shores did not use an equitable system to select players for the teams in the major league—the premier, competitive division for children ages 9-12—according to an email from Nina Johnson, the Central Region Director of Little League Baseball and Softball. “My office had received some correspondence that had indicated that Grosse Pointe Wood Shores LL may have used a player selection system that was not in accordance with one of the approved methods,” Johnson wrote in an email to Patch. “Upon contacting the league president, it was confirmed that the league …

MDOT is helping Tigers fans headed downtown for Games 3 and 4 plan ahead by posting major lane closures and restrictions on its website.
All roads lead to Comerica Park tonight as the Tigers host the New York Yankees once again in Game 4 of the American League Division Series. It could all end tonight with a win by Detroit, but another tie could result in a fifth game in New York. But that's getting a little ahead of ourselves. To help fans headed downtown for Game 4, the Michigan Department of Transportation is posting major lane closures and restrictions on its website. Titled "Getting to Comerica Park," the information appears in the rotating spotlight section on the MDOT home page at www.michigan.gov/mdot. Motorists also are advised to "Know …

As postseason gets under way for Detroit team, memories take center stage.
It’s just plain different. Period. Baseball is sacred to Americans. It’s our game, it’s marked the passage of time for more than a century, and it, unlike any other game, unifies us all. Our grandfathers talked of the game’s greats of their era, as did our fathers to us, as we do to our kids, and as they will to theirs—each generation comparing statistics, impact and status of their favorite players and teams. DiMaggio and Williams, Mantle and Mays, Ryan and Clemens, Pujols and Jeter — each name highlighting endless conversations between generations of baseball fans. Who is better? Where do they fit in list of all-time greats? What if Williams played today, or Pujols played then? Baseball is a common thread woven through the tapestry of …
